1up (http://www.1up.com/) got a new interview (http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=0&cId=3170256) with id (http://www.idsoftware.com/) CEO Tim Willits about the progress of id's games and growth of his company. Lets check it out:
1UP: On the PC side or the console side?
TW: Well, [on the] the consoles, especially, but even the PC [side as well]. The distance that we had between us and Splash Damage -- because they are in the U.K. -- was difficult. There were challenges, and that's one of the reasons why we want to build the Doom team up, to bring it inside. Publishers that we spoke with were more favorable to that approach.
1UP: Will this team work on Quake as well, or do you guys still feel comfortable allowing Raven to continue working on that franchise?
TH: Yes. Well, the current Quake project is Quake Live, and we're actually doing that internally as well. But that's multiplayer-focused, obviously. In terms of what happens next with Quake, a lot of that will depend on how the reception for Quake Live goes and whether that team continues to invest in building that out. That would be what we're hoping for, and then [we'll] figure out where we go down the road with that.
The Quake Live team is smaller. We're still not fully fleshed out [with] three teams that can work on three projects simultaneously. Even then, then you've got Doom, Quake, Wolf, Rage -- it's like there's still an odd franchise out. Plus Enemy Territory, which would lend itself with working with an external party.
1UP: At last year's QuakeCon, you announced that id titles would be available on Steam. Will Rage appear on Steam?
TW: We haven't quite worked through our electronic-distribution. John Carmack [id co-founder] made a comment about the media size, which unfortunately wasn't exactly correct because we haven't crossed that bridge yet. He said it was going to be too large to download, and I was thinking to myself, "You know, uhhhhh, people can do lots of things." So I want to correct that and say that....
1UP: Rage won't break the Internet.
TW: Rage won't break the Internet. Our relationship with Valve and our stuff on Steam has been very successful for us. A lot of the older games that we had to fix to work on newer operating systems allowed us to make them current. I had a Steam account on my machine at work, and if I wanted to load up old Wolfenstein or Doom at work, I [would] load it up on Steam because of DOSBox and all that stuff. And it's actually pretty awesome. We've been very successful with that.
