Videogamer writes: "Treyarch has announced that in the upcoming Call of Duty World at War on PC players will have access to friends lists and an invite system, similar to that usually seen in console titles.
In order to implement this function Treyarch says it's having to change the way the game authenticates the user. In CoD World at War the player will be authenticated in-game against a global master server which keeps track of and maintains unique profile names which are tied to a user's CD key.
A username and password will not be required to play, but each user will have a globally unique profile name.
What this has allowed Treyarch to do is introduce a friends and invite system to the game. Players will be able to add friends, filter servers by friends and join a friend's server. It will also be easy to invite any online friends into a game.
In order to accommodate for the fact that clan tags regularly change Treyarch has added clan prefixes which will show up in-game, meaning you can alter your clan tag without requiring a profile name change.
These new features will be available in the upcoming multiplayer beta. Call of Duty World at War is scheduled for release on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2 and DS on November 14.
