Hello again, Heroes.

Christmas is officially over and we've started a new year. Hopefully everyone survived the fireworks and is looking forward to more news from the Battlefield Heroes team.

We're already on our third Developer profile.

This time K4Ge interviewed William.

We hope you enjoy the read.

Who are you?
Hi. My name's William Ravaine.

Where are you from?
I'm from France. And yes, I do eat baguettes, snails and frogs but I don't wear any fancy hat nor a moustache.

What do you do on heroes?
I'm the lead programmer on the project. I work on the integration of the backend functionalities to the game client, character customization, the mission system, a bit of rendering, and various development tools. I'm also paying close attention to the overall stability of the game software.

What’s your favourite Heroes aspect?
There are so many cool things in Heroes that it's a bit hard to answer this... I really like the level of customization that the game offers.
People here have been coming up with some really funny visual combinations and no one looks the same! It's also very useful as a player because you can quickly identify your friends and nemeses by their unique look. You can also choose the abilities you want to focus on by spending more Hero points on them as you level up, which makes you potentially different from another player of the same class.

What’s your favourite class and why?
I really have a soft spot for the Soldier class, because it can bring so much fun and sheer chaos with the Stomp and Grenade Spam abilities. Trust me, nothing beats throwing jeeps and tanks off a bridge with Stomp. Soldiers are also a major pillar for the team as they can heal their team mates using the Area Heal ability.

What is the best thing about being a dev/designer?
Apart from the obvious "getting paid for doing what you enjoy the most", I'd say the game industry is a very competitive, challenging and creative environment to work in. There's hardly any time to catch your breath and you constantly need to keep up-to-date with the latest techniques and trends.

How did you become a dev/designer?
I got sucked into programming when I wrote my first mod for Quake I (I think I was 11). Ever since then, I learned as much as possible so I could one day write games that people would make mods for!

What other games have you worked on?
Battlefield Heroes is actually the first commercial game I've worked on. However, I did create mods for various popular game engines (Quake 1, 2 and 3, Half-Life) and wrote several small-scale 3D game engines for educational purposes. I also wrote a popular 3rd party application for the game Asheron's Call, called LifeTank, which is still being used today.

What did you do before Dice?
I was studying Computer Graphics Sciences at the University of Teeside, in the UK. I got recruited right after graduating.

What other games do you like?
These days I deliver massive zombie and survivor slaughter fests in Left 4 Dead, which is the only game that I’ve genuinely enjoyed for a very long while. I’m also playing DOTA, an exceptional mod for Warcraft III.

What is your all time favourite game?
The Quake series (especially the Quake 2 CTF mod by Zoid!), Duke Nukem 3D, Starcraft, Asheron’s Call and DOTA.

Any favorite bands or music in general?
Toto, Dire Straits, ACDC, Iron Maiden, Scar Symmetry, Opeth, Norther, Lamb of God, All The Remains…

What do you do in your spare time?
I practice drums, play and write PC games (I really prefer PC to consoles), try to learn some Swedish, read various science books, and try to keep my strawberry jam addiction under control with a bit of jogging.

Weirdest hobby?
I used to spend hours hunting for lizards back when I was a kid.

And what is your Nerdiest apparel?
I think I still have a Spiderman outfit somewhere…

If I could be a game character, I would be… ?
I’d so be Duke Nukem and run around shouting “Come get some!” and “It’s time to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I’m all out of gum!”… Oh wait, I already do that!
