Well it would appear as if DICE is making a move many refuse to do. Finally a game developer is moving on away from XP with no support for it for their upcoming Battlefield Title, Battlefield 3.

There is no doubt that Battlefield 3 will take PC Online Shooters to a whole new level, but not everybody might get a piece of the cake. The game will sport a brand new FROSTBITE 2 engine which is optimized for DirectX 11 and the now 10 year old XP, will not be supported.

The news was confirmed by DICE rendering architect Johan Andersson via a twitter post that the new engine will not support Windows XP.

The post reads:

Frostbite 2 is primarily developed for DX11. XP & DX9 is _not_ supported, 64-bit OS is recommended. Lots of time to upgrade if you havent!

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, as most multi platform games are DirectX 9 optimized . But it’s no secret that the Battlefield Series is a PC centered franchise.

Back in 2008, this would be considered as blasphemy, but this is 2010. DirectX 11 delivers what DirectX 10 had promised and then some. Those who are still running XP probably don’t have the hardware to meet the requirements anyway. Regardless, if this isn’t a reason enough for gamers to upgrade to Windows 7, we don’t know what is.

I'll be waiting. Guess i'll have to upgrade hardware once this becomes less vapor ware.
